Upper Dolpo trek is one of the highest plateaus in the world, which was closed to trekkers until 1989 to Upper Dolpo region. As it is one of the restricted areas, you need special permission from the Government. Nowadays, Upper Dolpo trekking has become a major destination of interest for trekkers and mountain lovers. It is an idea of highly 2100 square miles inside Nepal’s northwestern frontier with Tibet, encompassing some 30 villages and monasteries at altitude of eleven to fifteen thousand feet, Dolpo region is hard to match for its pristine beauty and rugged charm where one can still have opportunity to meet the nomadic people and their lifestyle almost untouched and unexplored. Laying in the rain shadow area Himalayas its landscape resembles that of Tibetan plateaus instead of lush, green monsoon, watered hills, elsewhere in Nepal, at comparative altitudes. Your journey to Dolpo pas begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj followed the next day by another flight to STOL dir strip at Jumla. From Jumla theUpper Dolpo trekking trial follows a south easterly direction through the villages of Gothichaur, Chaurikot and Hurikot. The people living in this region are similar to Tibetan Buddhists in race, religion and culture. They are very pleasant by nature that follows the pre Buddhist born religion. Their language is also closely related to Tibetans. Along with this, the notable figures seen here are snowy peaks, ancient and remote villages, rich wildlife, lovely Buddhist monasteries and wonderful lakes. A large portion of the district is protected by Shey Phoksundo National Park which protects endangered animals like snow leopard, musk deer, Tibetan wolf, blue sheep, the Himalayan black bear and great variety of birds. Continue your trek heading to north east; it crosses the Kangmara La to the villages of Pungmo and Ringmto to culminate at Shey Phoksundo Lake. The return journey will bring you south through villages of Sepka and Aankhe to Dunai for flight back to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu.
Approximately the twenty days Upper Dolpo trek is designed for those who want easy trekking route along with an opportunity to view the wildlife. The best season for this trek is beginning of August till the end of September when the wild flowers are in full bloom. Day 01: Arival at Kathmandu airport and transfer to the hotel..
Day 02: Sightseeing around Kathmandu valley and prepare for Upper dolpo trek.
Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepaljung.
Day 04: Fly from Nepaljung to Juphal (2,400meters) and trek to Dunai (2,150meters) 3 hrs.
Day 05: Dunai to Ankhe (2,660meters) 6 hrs.
Day 06: Ankhe to Renje (3,104meters) 7 hrs.
Day 07: Renje to Phosundo Lake (3,600meters) 6.30 hrs.
Day 08: Phosundo Lake to Phoksundo Khola (3,507meters) 6 hrs.
Day 09: Phoksundo Khola to Phoksundo Bhanjyang (4,402meters) 7 hrs.
Day 10: Cross Kang La pass (5360 meters) then trek to Shey Gompa (4,126meters) 7 hrs.
