Elephant Polo in Nepal


Elephant polo is one of the adventure sports of Nepal held in Chitwan National Park. There are two teams in this game. In each team, there are four elephants with a mahout in each. Behind mahout, there are players with a mallet in hand. The especial polo ball is used and the team should hit the ball in the opponent goal post. The pitch is clear with a Centre line, a circle with a radius of 15 meters in the center of the field, and a semi-circle with a radius of 30 meters measured from the Centre of the goal line at either end of the pitch. The time duration is 20 minutes and there is the break of 15 minutes. After break goal post is changed. Elephant polo championship is really interesting to watch.
Each year the event is organized by World Elephant Polo Association. This game is conducted every year in-between the last week of November to first week of December in Chitwan National Park. Each year World Elephant Polo Association conducts the tournament in the Grounds of Meghauli that is situated on the northern part of Chitwan National Park. Although elephant polo was first played in India at the beginning of the twentieth century, the modern game is originated in Meghauli, Nepal.
